Excel Baseball Academy has begun its second season with its spring showcase team – the Excel Blue Wave – comprised mostly of 17-year-olds from across Alabama, which will play in several tournaments around the Southeast through the end of the summer.
The team’s coaches, Steve Gendron and Josh Beshears, bring more than 40 years combined baseball experience to the team.
“We’re excited about forming our second team of talented players from across the state,” said Gendron. “It's an excellent learning opportunity for these young men. We’re looking forward to providing them a chance to improve their skills and showcase their talents in front of professional scouts and college coaches.”
Gendron is a former Florida Marlins infielder who retired from professional baseball in June 2007. Beshears is a former Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kalamazoo Kings pitcher. Along with Matthew Maniscalco, Beshears and Gendron operate Excel Baseball Academy in Oxford.
Members of the 2009 Excel Blue Wave team include Cade Medley of East Limestone, Tyler Mims of Hoover, Josh Carpenter of Sparkman, Lewis Hammond of Hoover, Brandon Lawing of Grissom (Huntsville), Torey West of Hazel Green, Clay Holcomb of Huntsville, Steven Cole of Huntsville, Cain Hollingsworth of Oxford, Jake Gayle of Oak Mountain, Carrie Baxter of Oak Mountain, Cole Prater of Oak Mountain, Taylor Sparks of Oxford, AJ Cole of Huntsville, and Alex Luna of Grissom (Huntsville).
